KMR sewing was formed by Martyn and Jo. We set up, initially, to fundraise for our daughter who had been selected to go on the 2023 Scout Jamboree to South Korea and then, because we really love what we do, we just kept on going!
Martyn is the creative one! He has a degree in Historical and Theatrical Costuming for Stage and Screen. Although he’s worked in film and theatre, he also has qualifications in upholstery and soft furnishings as well as being a very well established sewing machine engineer. Jo is the one with all the organisational skills and keeps everything running smoothly!
Since we began we have expanded and are now main dealers for BERNINA, Janome and Necchi sewing machines. There are a range of machines across all price ranges for you to try and see what sews best for you!
We offer trade-ins against new machines and then refurbish and sell these, incidentally Martyn can also service or fix all brands and types, be they industrial or domestic.
We currently run sewing courses in both our studio in Driffield (20-21 Middle Street South, YO25 6PS, above Rodger Bentley Power Equipment Ltd) and the Nafferton Club House, teaching people - from complete beginners who want to learn a new skill and have fun, to more advanced sewists wanting to develop new techniques. For example, free motion embroidery, zips or appliqué.
We think learning should be fun and if you can learn new skills at the same time, all the better! We can help with any kind of sewing; millinery, upholstery, pattern drafting, dressmaking, tailoring, soft furnishings, blinds and curtains or even just getting to know your sewing machine.
Some of our past attendees had never switched on a sewing machine before but left confident in their ability to set up and run their machines (and with a freshly made pin cushion and apron tucked under their arm!) We have something for everyone, and all abilities are more than welcome on our classes. We also offer one to one tuition should you prefer this.
KMR is an amalgamation of the first letter of our three children's names. Family matters and when we look at our children we see love, hope, growth and development so it just made sense to include them into the name of a business that has these very ideals at the core of its inception.
